Plenty of iPhone apps seek to entertain, organize or give us a boost of technology, but many of the good ones will cost you, if only a few dollars. When you consider that there are thousands of iPhone apps available, those few dollars can easily add up to eat a big portion of your bank account. The unspoken truth, however, is that many of these iPhone apps are completely free. Though they may not revolutionize your music library, they may tell you where you’re going or help organize your clutter schedule. These useful apps come free for the taking.
Flashlight – Flashlights are always useful, and this iPhone app turns your phone into one. It sends off bright illuminating colors to make it easier going down a dark stairwell, rooting through your car for that laundry money, or just checking out a map in the dark. Keep a light on that’s actually your cell phone. It’s one of the free iPhone apps that are actually worth keeping around.
iBear Timer – This iPhone app helps you keep track of the exact time that has elapsed after an important event or the remaining time that exists before an event happens. It’s great for when you have an important event to plan for, or a good conversation piece for knowing how long ago it was since you passed your final exam and got a diploma. This is one of those iPhone apps that can be used for fun as well as function. I use it to keep track of meetings, but it’s also useful to see how long it is until the weekend too.
If Found Please – If you lose your iPhone, this app might help you find it again. It’s simple but useful, displaying customized information on your wallpaper so someone knows how to locate you if they find your phone. It even works when the phone is locked.
Lotto Shake – Love playing the Lotto but run out of combination’s? This iPhone app gives you random number combination’s if you shake it like a pair of luck dice. It’s great for the Daily Play, Euro Millions, the UK Lotto or Thunderball. If you win thanks to your iPhone, you might need to take it out to dinner as a show of thanks. IPhone apps love to feel like they are appreciated.

Scour the web and you’ll probably discover iPhone apps that tell you how long it’s been since you did laundry. The iPhone puts technology in the palm of your hand. Some are good for fun; others get down to business. Here are a few of the best iPhone apps in town.
Bailout Wars – Does Wall St. tick you off too much? Mad that all that bail out money came out of your pocket? Don’t get mad. Get even with Bailout Wars. This genuinely okay but not blow you away gaming technology is a great time suck. It might cure your social angst too. The graphics could be better, but the idea of blowing away corporate executives looting your tax dollars sounds kind of appealing, doesn’t it? Of all the iPhone apps available to waste time, this one makes you feel better about the fact that the economy is crumbling.
Proactive Sleep – Is your soul being sucked down by the alarm clock? Count more sheep with Proactive sleep. This iPhone app wakes you to the sounds of your favorite music and then eggs you into a competitive game. If it’s too early for gaming, try the dream diary and figure out why you keep dreaming of dancing penguins every night. This iPhone app also tracks your sleep hours, alerting you when you slip below average.
iPhone Chat – You’d think buying an iPhone capable of everything would have a chat capability built in, but think again. Iphones are only as capable as the iPhone apps you use to put them to work. The iPhone chat allows you to log into AIM, view contacts and chat away to your heart’s content.
Gas.app – Get gas from the price of gas? Find immediate relief with this iPhone app. Enter in your zip code, and the Gas.app finds you the lowest gas prices in town. Simply click each station for a view of it on Google maps and find your way to discounted gas.
Go Movies – There are many iPhone apps dedicated to the movies, but this one gives a local connection. Access the movie site Fandango by zip code for the latest box office wherever you may be. The mapping system even tells you how to find your way through the traffic.

From time to time, I have to stop and take stock. Sometimes I’ll write about something that prompts me to revisit it and wonder: should I rehash this? Have I said everything I could about a particular topic? Can I say more? Am I being redundant? Sometimes the answer to all these questions is an emphatic yes. Sometimes, it’s a definitive no. Today, I think I’d like to rehash a topic that still haunts me every time I pick up my blessed iPhone.
Now, I realize there is a tremendous amount of animus directed towards we Mac-lovers — and for good reason. I know it’s annoying to have to put up with out smugness and our superior attitude. But don’t blame us — blame Steve Jobs. He made us into the snobs we are. After all, we were just following orders. In fact, I get new orders, via my Cupertino-designed beauty everyday. I swear — Apple is talking to us…in our minds.
Now, I’ve written about the iPhone and its 3G network and its awesome apps, but the feature I find myself using — trailing behind the actual phone and the email access — is the GPS driven map. I can’t tell you how many times that tracking beacon has directed me to assorted Shangri-las across this fine nation of ours. Taco stands, burger joints, coffee shops — I’d be utterly lost without this function. I know — what a cliche. But like all good cliches, there is truth behind it.
While I watch as each day my mind — and my memory — bleeds out into the ever-increasing, ever-expanding cloud, I can’t help but wonder…what was I talking about? Oh, yes, my GPS tracking device — I mean, my iPhone. Without it, I’m rudderless, a mere pawn in the chess game of the Gods. With it, I defy the Gods, I stand vigilant, ready to be directed to the nearest ATM or Hot Topic store. You can never have too many racing flame high-top Chuck Taylor sneakers, you know.
The tinfoil hat set are always keen on impressing upon me the possible fact that the phone could be used against me — as if I had some worthwhile scheme or master plan to dominate the world that was worth the effort. No, if the government wants to track me, I’d be flattered — but I’m not picking up the tab if they show up at my local Starbucks. If they do show up, I can show them my six pages of solid apps and then maybe we could go for a walk and have dinner together. Again, I’m not paying.
Snag your GPS tracking device — I mean your iPhone — online. Hurry, before the government shows up and eats all your Doritos.

Looking for iPhone apps to blow the minds of the old folks? Grandma may think the Internet is only a tool to send puppy photos to loved ones, but these apps will make her think differently. Prove to the old folks we’ve reached the age of science fiction technology with the following iPhone apps.
Google Earth – Technology may hand you the world, and this one does, virtually if not literally. This iPhone app displays satellite imagery from around the world in a 3D globe. It’s perfect for showing off the astounding capabilities of the iPhone when you can see Gramp’s front porch and see how his roses are blooming. You don’t even have to buy the world to view the world. Unlike a lot of iPhone apps on the market, this one is totally free.
SayWhere – Although you may get used to typing into the iPhone after a while, punching in addresses to lookup directions will always be a drag, especially if you are already fed up and lost. SayWhere was one of the first iPhone apps to translate speech to provide directions for Google Maps, Traffic, Yellow Pages or Yelp. A great app, SayWhere keeps your eyes on the road rather than the keypad.
SmackTalk – Feel like talking to the animals? How about talking just like the animals? This iPhone app lets you talk smack Chihuahua style. While it won’t help you with finances or directions, it’s bound to get you some laughs. The voice changing app turns your voice into a high squeaky guinea pig, puppy or kitten to repeat everything you say in a high pitched squeak or low frequency voice. You’ll sound just like a cartoon. Who said iPhone apps always have to be serious?
James Oliver’s 20 Minute Meals – It used to be the only time you used a phone to cook was to call Mom to ask about a recipe. This iPhone app goes a step farther by calling on world renowned cook Jim Oliver. He gives you full color photos, a video and step by step instructions to make great meals in 20 minutes. Create the perfect dream dinner for a date with your phone as the perfect cook book.

Real software development for the iPhone may slacken, but iPhone apps keep it tight. Consider that there are 50,000 new iPhone apps born every month. You really can’t keep up on them all. Some reinvent your everyday world. Others are cheap rip offs barely worthy of their iPhone name. Here are a few iPhone apps that are worth raving about.
Pageonce Personal Assistant – Have difficulty keeping up on all your accounts? Need to check stats and finances far away from your desktop? This iPhone app keeps all your account information on the same page. You get absolute access to all your online accounts, from investments to banking to your frequent flyer miles. Instead of juggling a dozen or so sites, the Pageonce Personal Assistant does it all with one application for easy convenience.
Fring – Get this app and never need another instant messaging tool again. Fring includes Google Talk, Yahoo Skype, MSN, Twitter, ICQ, plus VoIP calls over Wi-Fi if your minutes run low as you spend an afternoon lost in a bar or coffee shop. Though many iPhone apps follow one IM site or another, this one covers them all.
Routesy – You can’t live in the big city without this baby in your pocket. It’s a great way to keep up on train and bus schedules, as well as tell you what to take to get where you need to be. It works even better than the computer, simple and quick. Get the information you need with this smart but efficient iPhone app.
VNC Lite – How about turning your cell phone into your computer? With VNC Lite, you can view and fully control your computer remotely, as long as you are on the same network. Think it can’t get any better than a laptop as thin as a magazine? This beauty will put your entire desktop in the palm of your hand. While some iPhone apps connect you to your computer, this baby practically is your computer.
Bloom – This app takes Brian Eno’s generative ambient music and recreates the experience. Drop your finger on the liquid pastel screen to make simple loops. Create your own music and then add your own transcendental graphics. It’s perfect if your fingers want to dance. This is one of the few creative iPhone apps that let you be imaginative too.

The iPod Touch seems to stand alone in its field. It has very little competition, and what there is, isn’t much of a threat. There are a lot of reasons for this, and various industry watchers will offer their own opinions as to which reasons are most relevant. Frankly though, the various reasons that the iPod Touch has maintained its dominance is due to a combination of pretty much all of the noticeable factors.
What’s most impressive is that the iPod Touch is often seen as coming out on top when compared to hardware like Nintendo’s or Sony’s handheld gaming systems. The same can be said when comparing its functionality to things like personal organizers. Because of this, consumers are looking towards the iPod Touch even when it’s not an MP3 Player they are after.
When it comes to deciding whether to buy the iPod Touch or the iPhone, the first thing to note is that this really is a case about choosing between the two – so long as you want such a device in the first place. Owning both is virtually pointless, unless you really have money to burn and feel like having some extra hard drive space on hand.
When there is a practical choice between an iPhone and iPod Touch, you need to consider the features above all else. The iPod Touch doesn’t have a phone, it doesn’t allow for connection to the internet from anywhere, and it doesn’t have cool tools like Bluetooth and GPS. These are things you might not definitively need but, let’s face it, they are things you are going to use should you have them.
An iPod Touch owner gets to save a lot of money. An iPhone costs about the same, depending on the model, but only when a long contract is signed. Without the contract, the Touch is $400 less expensive. Then to justify spending that extra money, iPhone owners must spend around $30 a month extra so as to get internet via their cellular provider. The overall cost of an iPhone, once an AT&T contract is done with, is in the thousands.
Ask yourself what you’d want the device for. If it’s a phone, you already have one. The iPhone’s phone isn’t anything special, it just happens to be built in. If it’s a camera you want, you likely have that on your current phone. If it’s GPS functionality, maybe the iPhone is for you, though buying one of many other GPS enabled phones for a lot less money is also an option.
The iPhone isn’t bad. In fact, it’s great. The iPod Touch is great as well, and for most people, as all of this shows, it’s the better choice. Why spend extra money and sign contracts? Owning an iPod Touch is just easier, and still allows you to do just about all the same things.
The iPod has revolutionized the way we listen to music. But it’s not just the sound that people are interested in. An iPod can also be a fashion statement, and there are lots of iPod gadgets that can dress up your device. Learn more at Gizmos, Gadgets and Toys.
