   I don’t know good freeware, usually the free version only have the basic functions and poor services.

   The best video format for iphone is avc mp4 videos, you can try RZ Video Converter, it can convert any videos from one format to another format, such as vob to iphone videos, it can cut videos via setting start time and end time, it can merge/join multiple video files in various formats into one video file.

   i dont think there will be any REALLY free version for that, the only thing that matters is how much it costs,
   i think Ukoo ipod MP4 Video Converter may be a good choice as it cost very little, even just the free trial version it uses good, maybe you can go and take a look at their website:
