How long should it take for the iphone iOS4 update to download and be put on your iphone?

I started downloading it about a half an hour ago, it finished, and now it’s been saying "Backing up iPhone" for about 15 minutes now. Should it take this long? Or is something wrong? Should I hit the "stop" button?

let it go, it will backup all your files, apps, contacts, music – playlists, and songs, mail, voicemail, and everything else. It may take long because you might have the 16 or 32 GB version iPhone so a lot of files. Just wait it out.

it might if you have a lot of content on your iPhone. if you dont mind losing a few apps, just hit the restore button and it will wipe your iPhone and give you 4.0. and anyways, you should have a backup of your phone in iTunes if you use iTunes regularly

The installation of iOS4 is slightly broken at the moment. I waited for about 2 hours for my iPhone to back up and it refused. If it stays as it is for longer than here’s a solution:
1. Sync your iPhone normally, making sure that your data is backed up. This is the same back up that would be performed when updating.
2. Once sync and backing up is done, hold the Alt key and click Restore. Confirm this is the action you want to take, and your iPhone will erase all data and update to iOS4.
3. When it comes up with wanting to either set up your ‘new’ iPhone or restore from back up, chose restore from back up. This will put all your info back onto your iPhone.
and voila :]

Just let it run. It can take up to a few hours to backup everything.
